Community...Action...Talk! For nearly 60 years WELE has served the Daytona Beach under several call letters, owners and formats. In 2009 long-time talk show host Big John, a successful businessman and former County Council member, assumed its operation. John, whose focus is on community service and involvement, decided to donate the station to Bethune-Cookman University. On March 2, 2015 Bethune Cookman University officially took over operations and ownership of WELE 1380 from Goliath Radio LLC, renaming the station WELE 1380 The CAT. Contrary to popular belief “The CAT” is not in reference to the school’s mascot, the Wildcat, instead it is an acronym standing for “Community…Action…Talk.” This new name is a reflection of President Edison O. Jackson’s commitment to continue the school’s involvement in community outreach and enrichment. This station serves as a tool by which the University satisfies that commitment. A commercial station, WELE is a fully operational and revenue generating AM station, equally important it is also a teaching tool. It is meant to be a training ground for Bethune Cookman University students on the undergraduate and graduate levels interested in broadcast, production, engineering, sales and marketing, and business management.
